International Cosmic-Ray Research Support

At Accel Kitchen, as a member of IPPOG’s Cosmic Group SG, we support schools and educational institutions outside of Japan that are interested in cosmic-ray exploration activities. Specifically, we provide detector rentals, share cosmic-ray data observed by over 200 junior and senior high school students in Japan, and support exploration activities. Please review the following guidelines.

01 Provision of cosmic-ray detector

  • We provide cosmic-ray detectors to support exploration activities for junior and senior high school students.
  • We also provide manuals and video materials on how to use the detectors.

02 Provision of cosmic-ray detector

  • Over 200 junior and senior high school students have conducted various explorations, such as the correlation between cosmic rays and weather, the attenuation of cosmic rays by buildings, and the east-west effect of magnetic fields. We can share this data.
  • Additionally, we will share the Python code used for these analyses in the form of Jupyter notebooks.

03 International Exchange

  • In addition to Japan, various other countries have participated in the community, providing opportunities for international exchange through cosmic-ray research.
  • We support participation in international exchange events such as International Cosmic Day.

Example of International Cosmic-ray research

🇦🇷 Comparison of Cosmic Ray Arrival Frequencies in Argentina and Japan

Japan and Argentina research group try to compare the cosmic-ray arrival frequency between both countries. Argentina is in a magnetic anomaly band that we try to search through this measurement.

In 2024, high school students from Argentina visited Japan and participated in an exchange program.

🇹🇭 Educational Use at Chang Mai University

We provided a cosmic ray detector to Chang Mai University in Thailand. The Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) is conducting measurements of muon count rates across various latitudes, particularly between Antarctica and New Zealand, on the icebreaker ARAON.

Observation of Lightning Gamma Rays at Langmuir Laboratory

High school students from Japan bring COGAMO detectors and original gamma-ray detectors to Langmuir Laboratory in New Mexico, USA, a leading research institute for lightning. They engage in observing gamma rays from lightning.
